House of Ulysses

The gardens

La Maison d’Ulysse is a haven of peace whose charm comes as much from the 16th-century building as from the magnificent gardens that surround it.

It's Lionel who looks after the gardens all year round, knowing every nook and cranny and every plant. He hoes the flower beds, collects leaves, prunes trees and shrubs, clears undergrowth and replaces plants that need it...

ROMARIN

THE MEDITERRANEAN GARDEN

Fig trees with sun-kissed fruit. Tamarisk trees covered in tiny pink flowers. Groves of fragrant lavender. Wisteria running along one of the building's low walls. Savory, thyme and rosemary, reminiscent of the surrounding garrigue.

You'll discover the full botanical diversity of the Mediterranean dry garden when you walk through the door at Maison from Ulysse.

With the help of a landscape gardener and books by Olivier FilippiThe former owners, Guy and Gauthier, and a botanist specialising in Mediterranean gardens, have designed a garden adapted to the soil and climate of Provence, with a focus on perennials, shrubs and climbers. They are resistant to drought, wind, limestone and cold, as winters can sometimes be harsh in the Languedoc.

THE ARBORE PARK

We sit down at one of the garden tables for a mint tea. We meet around the petanque pitch for a game with friends. We sit in the shade of majestic, centuries-old oak trees, which in midsummer give us the coolness we've been waiting for.

In the Cévennes, From the 18th to the 19th century, some farms specialised in rearing silkworms for the Lyonnais weavers. The garden was planted with white mulberry trees, grown for their leaves, which fed the worms.

This mulberry plantation, which had been gradually abandoned, was saved by Guy and Gauthier, the former owners, who wanted to preserve the unique, wild character of the area.

Today, nature is coming back to life and new plants are appearing naturally.
